| Reviews on promo-CD “Sex in Heaven” (2005 Self-released) | Jun 21, 2008 |
Ukrainian-capital's band GRIMFAITH conquering Kiev, mainly due to the concerts, has recently presented to our judgment their promo-record "Sex in Heaven". Thus it was an intriguing to hear what guys managed to embody on the record. Anyway, the CD contains 6 songs all of which can be characterized as decent. The first one "Spinalonga" from the very beginning shows that the band has an outstanding potential. I would mark out the second track - "Jack is Back" - for its outstanding musical solutions, and the following "Ruins of My Heart" and "Funeral of Last Hope" will certainly touch the souls of the all susceptible people (Goths particularly). The last but one track contains a good deal of drive - "Vampire to Become" and the last title song - "Sex in Heaven" - is probably the most emotional composition in the luggage of GRIMFAITH. This material could be compared with the best works of MOONSPELL. The reason for such outline could be made due to the talent of the front man, who has a rather strong academic voice in trend of TYPE O NEGATIVE (the comparison is rather like). The only thing that I could wish is the more confident use of female vocals and growl, while everything was up to the scratch. In my opinion in few years GRIMFAITH will easy reach the status - the leading gothic/doom metal band from Ukraine... The first thing that struck my mind is that the record hardly contains hardly a half of the atmosphere which is usually present at their live shows. As for me that is the most significant minus of the material. The music, frankly speaking, doesn't break a new land in the gothic metal style; this is much more noticeable without the live-show atmosphere. Nevertheless, it is really pleasant to listen to these tracks. The creative works of the majority of bands consists of the same elements - that is why we speak about the musical style. However the minority of them combines these elements in such a way that it is not boring to listen to them. And GRIMFAITH manage to do this. Well let's pass to the elements in detail. The quality of the record (if to leave alone the atmosphere) is ok. Sure, I could discuss in a tone of expert the drawbacks of the record, although it is quite good as for the album. However, the keyboard parts could be recorded better - they sound plainer and a bit more artificial, than during the live performance. And if one could earlier accuse the band of following MOONSPELL, the music doesn't contain a tiniest bit of that stuff now. Even the vocalist's voice (pure male with a small portion of growling) differs a lot from the voice of Fernando Ribeiro. The keyboardist-back vocalist should work over her voice (and Ivan should do the same), although she uses what she has very effectively to make everything sound good. In general - they've got a great potential. If the members continue their work - it is certain that they will be known not only in Kiev. "...times of "Alma Mater" are gone..." At last they did it. From the first minutes it is clear that they've paid attention to the record and GRIMFAITH could be satisfied with it's quality. However there is nothing outstanding there. It is an ordinary gothic-metal, although beautifully played. The expressive melodies are rare. Personally I would mark out "Spinalonga", "Jack is Back", "Vampire to Become". But I think that somebody would dispute about the authenticity of the songs. The symbolic song "Funeral of Last Hope" (it is not clear whose funeral it is: hope's or the band's LAST HOPE, who were famous several years ago). Frankly speaking I was pleasantly surprised with this music. Firstly with the good material; secondly - with the qualitative staff performance, thirdly - with the beautiful arrangement. All this is certainly positive. The vocal of GRIMFAITH is low, leisured; languishing resembles a bit those of HIM, THE 69 EYES, TO/DIE/FOR and so on. In other words the wave of gothic metal found a beautiful realization in Ukraine. Gothic girls will be amazed. This band from Kiev has already gained the public recognition of the Ukrainian audience due to their live shows. And it is time to gain the same via the record. And in my opinion the band managed to do it. I should say the material is good and even, embodied in a good record (I would have made the sound more thick, however it is the matter of taste), with interesting compositional and performance ideas. Although nothing is perfect. So, the vocalist should work over his English pronunciation - the accent is very noticeable, and this grates upon the hearing. Plus some songs seem to be a bit overextended - however this is seen as a chick in this style and if compared with some of their colleagues GRIMFAITH may seem to be too short-spoken. In general the material is quite positive and is worth label's attention. Formed in 2002 in Kiev, GRIMFAITH released this six-track promo CD at the end of last year, showcasing their particular brand of Gothic Metal, which, surprisingly, has a fairly high quotient of Metal to it. "Sex in Heaven" won't go tearing down any aural boundaries, but then, was Gothic Metal ever really meant to? The obligatory alternating gender vocals are present and correct, as, of course, are the sex/vampire/love lyrics, and after repeated listens, this sceptic was nodding along with the engaging guitar lines. GRIMFAITH will primarily be of interest to: a) Goths, of course; b) MOONSPELL fans; c) Metallers attempting to seduce their beloved to the dulcet tones
